Two cultures collided for one big celebration at South Arm Community Centre’s first ever Gung Haggis Fat Choy event, last Friday.
Gung Haggis Fat Choy is the celebration of Robbie Burns Day and Chinese New Year.
“I think it is important to learn more about each other,” said Stella Au, the senior’s coordinator at South Arm Community Centre.
“I am so thrilled to do this here in Richmond,” she said.
The event was founded in 1998 by Todd Wong, who helped put on the event at South Arm.
Wong, along with Joe McDonald, played music, read poetry and spoke about Chinese and Scottish traditions.
“It [was] very engaging,” Au said.
Along with live music and stories, there was a dragon parade, haggis parade and the traditional Robbie Burns Day Address to a Haggis.
For lunch, there were lettuce wraps, which some guests put haggis in, chow mein, fried rice and fortune cookies for desert.
Gung Haggis Fat Choy was attended by a very diverse crowd of 70 people.
“I am very please that a good number of Chinese and English speakers came out,” Au said.
The event was conducted in English and translated into Mandarin.

Thirty-four Clan Members met at noon at the Sylvia Hotel.  Following a short business meeting at 12:00 p.m. with the election of Officers and Directors, brunch was served.

During brunch, Dr. Don McLeod gave a presentation of the plans in the works for the North American Gathering of 2016 in Merritt BC.  

At left Dr. Don displays his NAG shirt and at right his enthusiasm for all things MacLeod.

After brunch, Mark updated the Clan on the events held in 2013 and planned events for 2014.   Our signature event, Robbie Burns Luncheon will be held on January 19 2014.

Ian then entertained the group with his a few stories from his repertoire.

The setting was spectacular as only a  day with sunshine and blue skies in Vancouver can be with a view from the lounge of people out walking, running and cycling and soaking up the rays before the rains of November set in.  We live in the most beautiful place on earth.

• A few photos of our scenic Fraser River Cruise on September 7th.  We enjoyed blue skies, warmth and sunshine for our paddle wheeler boat excursion with great companions.  We set off from the New Westminster Quay and enjoyed lunch while we travelled down the Fraser River past New West, Coquitlam, and Port Coquitlam to the mouth of the Pitt River and back again.  A great way to spend some time and see the scenery from the water.

Clan MacLeod Societies of Canada

Congratulations, Ian and Judy. On July 1 2012 at the Clan MacLeod Gathering in Washington DC, Ian and Judy were awarded the Canadian Outstanding Clansperson award for years of activity.  As Ian wasn't able to attend, Neil McLeod presented him with his award at the AGM of the Clan MacLeod Society of Greater Vancouver in Vancouver in November.  In 23 years, only 23 have been awarded so quite an honour.  Judy attended the NAG and received her award there.
